Netgear has added to its Nighthawk range with the Nighthawk X4S modem router, decked out with a range of features designed to deliver fast broadband. The X4S VDSL/ADSL modem router is equipped with a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor and a built-in DSL modem, which Netgear states is the first DSL modem router on the market to support the latest Wave 2 Wi-Fi technology with Quad-Stream on both bands as well as multi-user MIMO-capability.
The modem is compatible with legacy ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ connections as well as VDSL and VDSL2 speeds, while Netgear states the X4S provides wireless speeds of up to 2.53 Gbps.
Quad-stream Wave 2 Wi-Fi supports up to four data streams in each Wi-Fi band, maximising connection speeds for faster gaming and smoother HD video streaming, while four high-performance external antennas and Beamforming+ improve the X4S’s range and reliability, extending Wi-Fi coverage and reducing dead spots.
MU-MIMO is designed for simultaneous streaming of data for multiple devices, with Netgear stating the X4S provides major bandwidth improvement in next-generation mobile devices. Instead of sending data to one device at a time, MU-MIMO delivers data in parallel to multiple devices simultaneously.
“If multiple people in your household are streaming HD internet content at the same time, it’s very likely that the DSL modem router you get in your subscriber service package is not capable of supporting your bandwidth needs,” David Henry, Netgear home networking vice president of product marketing and engineering, commented.
“With the Nighthawk X4S AC2600 WiFi VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, you’ll take advantage of the fastest processor in a DSL modem router combined with the latest innovations in wireless technology for the best experience you can get today for streaming, gaming and file sharing.”
The X4S additionally features dynamic QoS prioritisation capability, recognising each individual application and the device it is running on and prioritising network traffic accordingly.
It sports four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, along with twin USB 3.0 ports and one eSATA port for external storage, with the USB ports Netgear ReadySHARE-enabled for wirelessly accessing and sharing content on USB hard drives from devices in the home network.
Netgear’s ReadySHARE Vault free application software takes automatic backups of incremental changes on all PCs in a home network and saves them to a USB hard drive connected to the X4S modem router, with the X4S also supporting the Netgear genie app, providing a personal dashboard, designed to make it easy to install, monitor, control and repair a home network.
Available now from retail shops, the X4S carries a price tag of $549 RRP.
