Rovi a Company that licenses electronic program guides to the likes of Freeview, Foxtel and TiVo has unveiled a Personal Media Manager software application which several vendors in the Australian  set top box market are being asked to bundle with their consumer offerings.

The application enables consumers to “clean” or update the entertainment data residing in their media libraries as well as stream and share music, videos and photos stored on devices on a home network.

The company, formally known as Macrovision recently expanded into multimedia entertainment software systems and applications. They are now targeting manufacturers of set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, residential home gateways, digital TVs, digital media receivers and network-attached storage devices to add the software to their products. It will also work on online stores and portals, the company said.

Among the Companies looking at the product is Telstra for their new Tbox offetring.

The Personal Media Manager software is compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems, and is designed as a branded companion application.

Manufacturers like Telstra or Topfield can apply their own skins to the interface, Rovi claims.

“Consumers today are seeing their digital media libraries grow considerably as they continue to acquire, create and consume music, videos and photos,” stated Corey Ferengul, Rove product management and marketing executive VP. “As a result, consumers need an easy way to manage their media collections and drive even more content consumption. We believe a Rovi solution including Personal Media Manager offers device manufacturers a distinctive capability that they can use to differentiate their offerings.”

The software is powered by Rovi’s LASSO media-recognition technology and supported by its deep entertainment data. Personal Media Manager cleans, identifies and tags content with essential descriptive information on albums, songs, movies and other files.

Rovi said the application is also capable of connecting the consumer to online services and stores provided by the CE manufacturer or site, enabling simplified access to more content.

Personal Media Manager uses Rovi’s Connected Platform media-networking technology; includes a full DLNA player, server and controller; and allows content streaming to devices on the home network.

It also offers consumers the ability to connect devices running on different platforms in order to share content.

The software can also be configured to work with popular social-networking sites, to share personal content, including photos and home videos.
