A new software feature released by Tesla allows drivers to summon their car from their smartphone, with Tesla stating one day its vehicles will be able to drive “anywhere across the country” to meet owners.Telsa’s release of its Version 7.1 software expands on its autopilot functionality, while introducing Summon, for Model S and Model X vehicles.
The Summon feature allows drivers arriving home to prompt their Tesla to open their garage door, enter the garage, park itself and shut down.
“In the morning, you wake up, walk out the front door and summon your car,” Tesla states. “It will open the garage door and come to greet you.”
Telsa states that Summon “also eliminates the burden of having to squeeze in and out of tight parking spots”.
As for what the future holds, Tesla envisages the software update as a step towards further autonomous driving capabilities.
“Eventually, your Tesla will be able to drive anywhere across the country to meet you, charging itself along the way,” Tesla states. “It will synch with your calendar to know exactly when to arrive.”
Taking to Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has narrowed down the time-frame, stating:
“In ~2 years, summon should work anywhere connected by land & not blocked by borders, eg you’re in LA and the car is in NY”.
