Samsung is set to reveal an alternate OS to Android in an effort to take control of the software running their devices.A new video has emerged showing a Samsung’s Z9005 running a Samsung/Intel-developed Tizen operating system.
The video provides an insight into the new operating system, it shows Tizen running on hardware similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S3. Samsung has been rumoured to be prepping Tizen as a potential alternative to Google’s Android platform for some time.
Currently called the Z9005, under “model” in the device’s information settings page, the Z9005 is shown to be running Tizen version 2.2.0, even though previous leaks have purportedly shown Tizen OS version 3 running on Galaxy S4 hardware.
The new look OS, Tizen appears to borrow heavily from both Android and Nokia’s defunct MeeGo project.
The pull-down settings menu appears straight out of Android, as does settings navigation scheme. Samsung ports over elements of the TouchWiz interface seen on its Android-powered Galaxy devices, with Tizen OS presenting toggles for functions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more at the top of the pull-down settings menu. From MeeGo, the OS takes its circular icons, a noticeable difference from the look of Android.
Tizen is said to be scalable from mobile devices through home appliances on up to televisions. As the system is based on Linux, it is also able to run Android apps with some tweaking. Samsung, which manufactures a wide range of devices across product categories, is said to be planning televisions, tablets, and more, all running on the new OS.
