Today, Blueye Robotics has announced their new smartphone controlled pioneer underwater drone, which will be used to aid in the survival of the Great Barrier Reef. The new underwater drone has hardware capable of travelling below the surface up to 150 meters, and dives eight times deeper than the average scuba enthusiast.

Th new drone is self-stabilising with a built-in full HD resolution camera with powerful LED lights. The new drone will be used in Cairns to gather information on various sea-life in the Great Barrier Reef.

Dean Miller from Reef Legacy is using the new drone on a 21-day expedition to explore the Reef’s most remote and unexplored areas. Researchers exploring the Reef have been unable to access and research the most pristine parts of the northern sections of the Reef.

The new Drone is controlled with a wireless drone controller for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, with many mobile devices able to transmit imagery beneath the surface in full High-definition. It connects to a transmission box, and allows for crystal clear vision. The digital dive mask, VR Headset with the smartphone resolution provides a realistic underwater virtual reality experience.

This new technology is yet to surpass Aerial drone technology, which is much cheaper than this new product. Pre-orders can be placed for this product at Blueye’s website. The new product will set you back $6000.
