Video Ezy is trialling a new electronic rental download service that it claims is a world-first.
The company together with Mobilesoft and The Content Factory has come up with a rental model that means you take in a portable storage device, such as an iPod, to Video Ezy. You then copy to your device up to 40 movies from the database free of charge.
Once home you plug in the device to the Home Media Centre (which you purchase from Video Ezy) and transfer the movies across. Then you select which movie you are going to watch and pay for it at the time you view it. (Payment is the only thing that involves going online).
The Home Media Centre will combine a digital television tuner, 160GB hard disc drive recorder and an encoder/decoder using the H.264 technology. It also features Mobilesoft’s patented security anti tamper technology, and ADAPT TV product, which will enable it to upgrade remotely, the company says.
The idea is that this way, customers will be able to avoid the hassle of downloading movies and all the relevant software that goes with it.
Managing Director of Video Ezy, Paul Uniacke said: “We know our customers prefer to watch these movies on their television set, rather than going through the long and costly process of installing programs and downloading movies from the internet onto a PC. We believe our new electronic rental service will compliment our existing rental and retail business, which is still going strong.”
The trial will be conducted over the next three months and all going well, the commercial service will commence in the first half of 2007, the company says.
