They did not think of it themselves now Microsoft is trying to copy Apple’s highly successful iTunes and application download service by launching Windows Marketplace the Company has announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Phone users will be able to visit the Marketplace site to download games, tools and programmes. And in another move aimed at tempering Apples runaway success with their iPhone Microsoft is launching a new Windows Mobile operating system according to Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive. The new name will be Windows Phone.

He claims that the new OS will make it easier for users to transfer music, pictures and texts between their phone and computer however he has failed to explain how Microsoft intends to work around Apple touch patents or whether the new OS will eliminate the slow response time of the Windows Mobile OS.

According to research presented at the World Congress Apple iPhone and iPod touch owners have downloaded more than half a billion games, tools and programs from the store generating millions in profits for Apple.

This success has led to several other phone vendors looking to offer application download services. However several application developers who have made millions developing applications for the iPhone and iPod touch have said that they are reluctant to support other platforms due to a veiled threat by Apple to stop hosting their application.

At the recent HTC Touch launch in Sydney Google launched an application store for devices running its Android operating system. However a big problem for developers is that Google are looking to give the applications away for free as unlike Apple they have no transaction engine running that links to a credit card.

The Daily Telegraph in the UK reported “We do so much better with a clear competitor in the space,” said Aaron Woodman, director of Windows Mobile consumer experiences at Microsoft. “We recognise that consumers buy a phone, they don’t buy the software. For us, that’s very important, because it’s recognition of a shift in our business. It marks a shift in our strategy.”

In addition, Microsoft has also unveiled a backup service for Windows Phone devices. Part of their Cloud Computing offering the serve which Microsoft will charge will allow users to back up their phone while on the road.

The new range of Windows Phones will be available later this year, confirmed Mr Woodman.
