Following its unveiling at CES 2017 early this year, the HDMI Forum has officially released the next HDMI standard – HDMI 2.1, which boasts support for 10K video resolution.

Details pertaining to HDMI 2.1 have now been finalised and released, meaning companies can begin integrating it into their devices.

In addition to offering support for 10K video, the new standard will also support a suite of other video output including 4K video at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz.

Given the current consumer electronics landscape – recently notching a mainstream audience for 4K – HDMI 2.1 is still largely a future notion, rather than one which will immediately affect today’s devices.

HDMI 2.1 will also theoretically be able to support dynamic HDR video.

However, as the new HDMI standard is fully backwards compatible it is likely companies will start integrating the new specification into their devices.

Consensus is, it will be a while before consumers can take full advantage of HDMI 2.1’s capabilities.
