HTC’s flagship U11 is set to become the second major smartphone in the world to offer support for Bluetooth 5.0.

As reported by Ausdroid, a filing submitted to the US FCC indicates that HTC are moving to “enable Bluetooth 5.0 by software without any hardware change.”

Offering twice the speed and four times the range as Bluetooth 4.2, users will be able to maintain connections with devices up to approximately 240 meters away from the phone.

Bluetooth 5.0 also makes the wireless transmission standard more versatile, allowing you to easily pair multiple wireless headsets to the same audio source.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ were the first two handsets on the market to boast support for the new Bluetooth 5.0 wireless transmission codec. HTC is second major vendor to move towards supporting the  latest version of the wireless transmission technology.

It’s unknown what the timeline for this update looks like. However, given the company are going to the trouble of adding the feature to the already-released U11 rather than just hold out until their next major release suggests it’ll likely arrive sometime in the near future.
