While Sony is still trying to sort out bugs in their new Playstation Vita handheld arch rival Nintendo has come out to claim more than 4M sales of their popular 3DS gaming handheld in the Japanese market alone.
Aaccording to data collected by Famitsu, the Nintendo device is also said to have reached sales of more than 510,000 units for the holiday shopping week that ended on Christmas day, setting a new record for weekly sales across the globe.
Meanwhile Sony has issued a PlayStation Vita 1.51 firmware update just over a week after the device was introduced in Japan. More fixes are expected prior to the launch of the device in Australia.
Aside from hardware sales, several games for the Nintendo mobile platform have passed one million units. Both Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart7 have reportedly reached the milestone during holiday sales.
Although the 3DS stumbled in the market as it arrived early in the year, the device appears to be slowly building in popularity since the company slashed the price of the device.
The move was viewed as necessary to compete with new competitors in the mobile gaming arena, such as smartphones and the iPod touch.
