Nintendo has ditched the switching part of its Switch handheld/docking hybrid console with the newly announced Switch Lite, a smaller and lighter handheld only console.

The new Switch Lite (A$329.95) uses a smaller 5.5-inch screen, doesn’t output to an external display or come with detachable controllers.built in controllers Nintendo Unveil New Handheld Switch Lite

The Switch Lite also only fully supports games that run in handheld mode, with games designed to be played on the Switch in tabletop mode lacking some features and requiring external hardware or controllers.

Multiplayer will be supported cross platform, with gamers able to play together on Switch and Switch Lite consoles.

Nintendo said while there’s no performance tradeoff with the Lite device, the battery will last longer than the original Switch.

The Switch Lite releases locally on September 20 in grey, yellow and turquoise, with a special Pokemon edition to follow on November 8.
