Nintendo has announced that its DS Lite games console was the highest selling games console of 2006, outselling competitors in both the handheld and home console market.
Sourcing figures from GfK, Nintendo said the DS Lite console outsold its competitors both in the critical December retail period and throughout 2006.
The DS outsold its next-gen competitors such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony PS3, and even its next-gen cousin the Wii.
Nintendo boasts that the Wii, which launched on December 7th, broke the Australian record for the biggest launch of a video game selling 50,000 (according to GfK) units in 3 weeks of December.
“We promised to bring gaming to the masses and make interactive entertainment relevant to a broader audience. We promised we would disrupt the industry”, says Nintendo’s Rose Lappin. “I think we have delivered on these promises.”
The company will be releasing new games for both Wii and DS in the next few months.
