Nokia is making a return to the mobile devices market, unveiling its N1 tablet at a technology conference in Helsinki.Nokia, which this year sold its handset division to Microsoft, plans to bring the N1 to the Chinese market in the first quarter of 2015, retailing at an estimated US$249 (around $288) before taxes, with the “anticipation of expanding sales to other markets”.
“We are pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers’ hands with the N1 Android tablet, and to help make sophisticated technologies simple,” commented Sebastian Nystrom, Nokia Technologies head of products.
“The N1 has a delightfully intuitive interface and an industrial design to match it. This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet.”
The N1 features a 7.9″ display with 2048 x 1536 resolution, an 8 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and 5 MP front-facing camera, is powered by a 2.4 GHz Intel Atom quad-core processor and runs on Android Lollipop.
The Z Launcher interface allows users to “scribble a letter or two to find their content quickly”, and over time learns what applications are in use, predicting and highlighting the applications users are expected to want based on time of day and location.
Nokia states the industrial design of
the N1 – a one-piece aluminium design with a soft finish in both lava
grey and natural aluminum colours – is “deliberately developed to match
the elegant simplicity of the interface”.
