Nokia E6 Bets On New Symbian Anna To Turn Falling Share Prices

Nokia’s updated Symbian Anna software makes its Australian release on their new E6, but with the company’s share price hitting a 13 year low, will it be enough to pull them out of the financial rift?

Nokia have launched the E6 which features the company’s first revamped version of their ailing Symbian software. The ‘E’ in ‘E6’ indicates it falls under their professional series, coming with QuickOffice software right out of the box.

Microsoft Word and Excel editing software are available on most software platforms, but typically editing software comes at an additional cost paid by the user. Completing the professional complexion projected by the E6 is PowerPoint and PDF viewing.

Ergonomically geared for professional duties, the E6 sports a bar form with a QWERTY keyboard and a landscape 16 million capacitive colour touchscreen. Plated with scratch proof Gorilla glass, its body is made of premium materials, resulting in its sophisticated charm.

Multimedia on the E6 seems competitive, with an 8 megapixel camera used for still shots and 720p video recording at 25fps. All of which can be saved on its 8GB internal memory, or a microSD memory card holding up to 32GB of storage.

The industry common features are there too, with an accelerometer, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM-Radio and A-GPS. Nokia’s GPS software comes with turn-by-turn voice prompts at no cost, but the Assisted component in A-GPS will use data and may be charged by a carrier.

Running Nokia’s updated Symbian Anna platform, the E6 is powered by a 680MHz ARM 11 processor and juggles applications with its 256 MB of RAM. When considering contemporary phones are running 1.2GHz dual core processors and almost four times the RAM, Nokia seem to be trailing behind competitors HTC and Samsung.

Worse yet, Nokia have yet to release a phone powered by a 1GHz processor in the Australian market, with their expected first to be one of their Windows Phone 7 collaborations. In fact, since the company chose not to jump on the now thriving Android band wagon, it’s been spasmodically investing in different operating systems, some of which include, Symbian, Maemo, Meego, and its most recent affair, Windows Phone 7.

With both companies losing ground in the mobile phone industry, they’re looking to one another for a boost in sales, particularly Nokia whose share prices are the lowest they’ve been in 13 years.

In an attempt to keep their Symbian OS competitive, Nokia have revamped it, and named the innovated version Anna. Anna comes with new aesthetic changes, including new font, new icons and a general layout touch up.

In addition to the pretty trinkets are an updated browser, enhanced OVI maps, enhanced touch-screen keyboard entry and the linking of social status updates with contacts. This minor face lift coupled with Nokia dropping the price of its mobile phones is putting the manufacturer in a slightly more attractive position. Having said that it hasn’t put the brand ahead of its rivals, it has simply caught up with them.

With the Nokia E6 the first Symbian Anna phone available in Australia and priced with an RRP of $549, it will be interesting to see if its you-get-what-you-pay-for morality pays off.
