Nokia, who will axe another 10,000 employees in an effort to survive, is set have another throw of the dice with the launch tonight of a new 808 Pureview smartphone with some suggesting it feature the new Windows 8 OS.In recent months most Nokia devices have struggled as brands like Samsung roll out a massive marketing campaign for their new Galaxy S3.
Images and posts on Nokia’s Facebook page claim that an event is planned in LA tonight; the same time that Microsoft is tipped to launch a new Windows 8 tablet, with an operating system that Nokia is banking on to save the struggling Company.
The new device is tipped to be the 41MP 808 Pureview after Nokia has posted three images to its Facebook page featuring “06.18.12.” Electronista claims that the most recent is a cropped shot of the artwork from 808 State’s album exel. Other shots include a satellite image of Hawaii, which is home to the 808 area code. The cover photo for Nokia’s Facebook page has also been changed to read “PureView. Like.”
The launch comes as analysts question the viability of Nokia, who on Saturday warned that their losses will be worse than the company expected just two months ago.
The profit warning was the third in a little over a year for Nokia, which is getting hammered by Apple and brands like HTC and Samsung in the smartphone market and brands like LG and Huawei in emerging markets.
The worsening results raise further doubts about Mr Elop’s strategy to turn around the company by focusing on smartphones powered by Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Nokia rolled out its first phones under the partnership in October.
