Sony who were slammed last year for long delays in giving away PS3 consoles as part of a Bravia TV promotion with some consumers resorting to taking their complaints to their Government local Fair Trading departments have today said that they have already given away 50% of the promised allocation of Blu ray players which is being used by Sony in an effort to beat Samsung and Panasonic in the flat panel TV market.
The Blu ray promotion which is due to finish tomorrow was recently criticised by retailers who said that the giving away of a $600+ player prevented them selling a Blu ray player to a customer.
Currently Sony are the 2009 market leader in Blu ray players on volume with 43% share however it appears that Sony have been discounting with Panasonic the leader on value with 43% of the value share compared to Sony’s 35%.
While Sony are saying that they have only given away 50% of the allocated 20,000 units and with the promotion due to finish tomorrow it is not known whether Sony has achieved the 20,000 Bravia TV unit sales target as Sony PR executives are refusing to return ChannelNews calls.
