Optus is tipped to announce improved revenues with insiders telling ChannelNews that the carrier’s recent $90 broadband package had been a “spectacular success”.
“Consumers are coming back to Optus” said one senior manager who also confirmed that Fetch TV whose media player is bundled with the Optus broadband package is also witnessing “unprecedented demand” for their players.
Broadband is not the only area where Optus is cranking out new deals in an effort to take on Telstra.
Effective immediately $30 on Optus pre-paid gets you access to a new My Prepaid Monthly offer. Interested parties have to sign up by 19th of April to get the package.
That $30 expires in 30 days, and gets you 1.5GB of data, 350 call minutes and $5 of extra credit for premium services. That’s up an extra 500MB on the previous $30 recharge offer.
The $45 offer gets you unlimited call minutes, 3GB of data and $10 of extra credit, while the $60 recharge gets you unlimited free minutes and 6GB of data, putting both offers up by 1GB from the old offer.
The new packages spanning both broadband and mobile are designed to deliver consumers “value for money” said an Optus executive.
Late in Mach Optus could get a major boost when Netflix launch in Australia. The US service which is tipped to be on the Fetch TV box allows consumers to access unlimited content with unlimited broadband for an additional $10 a month.
Telstra who own 50% of Foxtel an arch rival to Netflix is tipped to only support unlimited downloads for Foxtel content and not Netflix content.
ChannelNews has been told that one way that Telstra could compete is that they give consumers additional data allowances.
Scott Lorson the CEO of Fetch TV said “Since Fetch TV was bundled with the new Optus $90 Ultimate Cable Bundle we have seen significant sign up for the Fetch TV package, beyond what we anticipated”.

The new Ultimate Cable Bundle that gives its customers unlimited cable broadband data, local calls and access to its Optus Fetch TV entertainment package for $90 a month.
The Fetch Entertainment pack features access to over 30 channels, including ESPN, the Disney Channel and a range of movies per month.
The deal also includes an international calling pack, with unlimited calls to landlines in Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Optus’ standard HFC cable network can deliver download speeds of up to 30 Mbps, or up to 100 Mbps for those willing to spend an extra $20 a month for the added speed pack.
The entry-level bundle makes Optus the first Australian telco to offer unlimited high-speed internet, calls and entertainment for under $100.
