At Optus, Australia’s number two operator increased its net profit by 15 percent to A$175 million in the quarter.
Meanwhile Telstra has downgraded profit guidance four times in 18 months as it’s revenue base remains under siege from the likes of Optus and Vodafone The Telstra share price is still below the $3.30 issue price in the 1997 float.
Optus’s EBITDA grew nine percent year-on-year to $556 million on the back of a 5 percent increase in revenue to $2.32 billion.
The mobile business put in a good performance with service revenue growing 10 percent to $1.26 billion and EBITDA increasing by 8 per cent to $374 million.
“Optus reported another strong quarter of mobile growth, adding 189,000 net additions in the September quarter,” Ovum senior analyst Nicole McCormick says.
“Strong demand for smartphones saw Optus register its highest quarterly net additions for postpaid users figure in two years. Optus’ mobile arm continues to be the star of its Australian business, posting 8 percent year on year growth in EBITDA for the September quarter.”
McCormick pointed out, however, the mobile division was also the only Optus business to report an increase in revenue for the half-year.
