An Australian woman in charge of fixing Apple Maps and whose app search engine was acquired by Apple for $50 million is leaving the company, according to a Fairfax report.

Cathy Edwards is leaving just two years after Apple acquired Chomp, the start-up she co-founded with Ben Keighran, Fairfax says.

Apple’s launch of the Maps service in 2012 was near-disastrous, with many reports of faulty location findings – in one Australian case, a party of people heading for Mildura claimed to have been directed to a desert national park 70km from the city and stranded in what were claimed to be life-threatening circumstances (CDN, Nov 12, 2012).

The Maps service has however been much improved in recent months.

– Separately, the Fairfax report says Apple has acquired an iPhone photography app developed by Melbourne man John Papandriopoulos for an undisclosed sum. The app is said to enable an iPhone to shoot 20 high-quality photos in one second.
