The Australian and NZ PC market grew at better than 20 per cent in the second quarter of 2010, compared with Q2 last year, IDC analyst Bryan Ma said.
Ma was expanding on preliminary regional results by IDC which showed the Asia-Pac market., excluding Japan, grew 15 per cent sequentially and 36 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter to reach 27 million units.
The region was 1 per cent below forecast, as stronger-than-expected desktop PC shipments helped to offset the shortfall in portable PCs.
Portable PC shipments in markets like China and Indonesia came in short of IDC’s “aggressive” forecasts, Ma, said. But, he added: “Heavy demand for notebooks will still be a key driver in the upcoming years, despite potential competitive pressure coming from media tablets like Apple’s iPad.”
Lenovo continued to lead the region with 20.3 per cent of the overall market, while HP continued a downward slide – from 16.2 per cent in Q2 last year to just 11.6 per cent in the latest quarter. Strong commercial support saw Dell hang on to third position with 9.6per cent, followed by Acer on 8.7per cent, and Asus 5.2 per cent.
