Panasonic Stockpiles 3D TVs Into Shrinking Plasma Market

Panasonic has released two new Viera plasma screens boasting 3D displays and IPTV services in-built into its UT30 Series in 50- and 42-inch sizes, but new research shows the market’s set to slump this year.
The two new models jump onto Panasonic’s latest plasma line-up of 16 screens announced back in April, but DisplaySearch researchers have tipped a reduction in demand for new TVs globally. While LCD TVs are forecast to account for 206 million sales worldwide this year, plasma screens sit at 17 million.

Panasonic’s 50 inch TH-P50UT30 is out now running at $1,299 while the smaller TH-P42UT30A is also out with a price of $1,099.

The entry-level displays feature full HD picture resolution behind tough-built panels. A 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio keeps the blacks darker and whites brighter while 2D-3D conversion upgrades typical 2D content.

IPTV and remote control comes through the Viera Connect platform that integrates catch-up TV services, social networking and other services like Skype. There’s also the Viera remote app for controlling the TV via Apple devices.

Growth for plasma TVs began slowing in mid-2011, with an all-round decline of six percent year-on-year.
