The worldwide PC monitor market declined 12 per cent in the 2015 first quarter compared to last year’s corresponding quarter, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), with the IDC expecting shipments to continue to decline in the near term.In total, more than 29 million units were shipped in the quarter, with the IDC anticipating that around 120 million units will be shipped for the full year. The IDC has forecast a 3.4 per cent year-on-year decline in shipments to 28.8 million units in the second quarter.

By 2019, the IDC expects that worldwide shipments will be less than 104 million units.

“Although there were a few bright spots – Japan experienced a gain of 2.0 per cent over the previous quarter after four consecutive quarters of decline – IDC expects the trend of declining PC monitor shipments to continue for the near term,” Phuong Hang, IDC Worldwide Trackers director, commented.

“Some improvement may come later in the forecast as new product campaigns spark a modest recovery in the consumer segment, aided by contributions from the SMB and SOHO segments.”

LED backlight technology is by far the dominant technology in the market, capturing a 98.5 per cent market share in the quarter, while the 21.5″ screen size, which has held the largest worldwide share for the last ten quarters, saw a 23.8 per cent share increase.

The IDC expects monitors with TV tuners to grow 10.9 per cent year-on-year to a 6.4 per cent market share in 2016, up from 5.4 per cent in 2015, with LG and Samsung leading the way with a combined market share of 96.4 per cent.

Dell remained the number one worldwide vendor in the first quarter with a 15.8 per cent market share, while experiencing a 7.8 per cent year-on-year decline in shipments. Samsung, in number two position, captured a 12.7 per cent market share, with shipments declining 13.3 per cent.

Rounding out the top five, in third position, HP secured an 11.5 per cent market share, with shipments declining 13 per cent, LG Electronics captured a market share of 9.7 per cent, with shipments declining 18.2 per cent, and Lenovo secured a 9.1 per cent market share, with shipments growing 1.8 per cent.
