Worldwide PC shipments reached 79.4 million units in the third quarter of 2014, down 0.5 percent from Q3 last year, according to researcher Gartner.
“Growth in the mature markets was offset by a dip in shipments in emerging markets, similar to what was seen in the second quarter of 2014,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
However Kitagawa saw a bright note, at least in Western Europe and North America. The results in these regions “can be a sign of gradual recovery for the PC industry.,” he said.
For the first time, the sum of the top five vendors’ share reached two-thirds of the worldwide PC shipments and all showed stronger growth compared to the industry average.
But Gartner notes that some vendors – including Sony and Samsung – have already scaled back or have withdrawn from the PC business. and Toshiba joined them in Q3 14.
Lenovo extended its position as the worldwide leader in PC shipments, as it accounted for 19.8 percent of the market in the third quarter of 2014, followed by H-P with 17.9pc, Dell on 12.8c, Acer 8.6pc, and Asus at 7.3pc.
While its overall growth rate slightly declined in PC shipments, H-P was able to post single-digit growth to maintain the number two position worldwide. Gartner predicted the impact of this week’s decision to split the company on its PC business operation “should not be significant.”
Dell’s strong quarter indicated its commitment and investment into the PC market has been consistent since going private, Gartner said.
