It appears that while PlayStation may have gone mum about the PlayStation 5, it is ramping up its Virtual Reality gaming hardware with a new wireless VR headset.
PlayStation has been steadily pulling out of events but ramping up its patents of late — indicating that some new hardware is about to be announced.
Indeed, PlayStation Australia just announced a new Alpine Green special edition DualShock 4 controller to its range (RRP $99.95), joining Magma Red, Wave Blue, Glacier White, Green Camouflage and Jet Black.
The new controller is slated to be available from select retailers in Australia from April 26, 2019.
Spotted by GamingBolt, a patent filed recently in Japan reveals a wireless VR headset.
The current PSVR headset is supported by the PS4 with motion controls, but its connecting cord is widely regarded as a nuisance.
A wireless headset would bring make the VR experience far more lifelike and immersive.
According to the patent, it appears the headset would be controlled by a separate box that would monitor the headset’s movement while displaying imagery concurrently.
It is unclear if it is meant for the PS4 or the next iteration of the PlayStation console.
Additionally, this is just a patent filing and not a confirmation of tech to come, but it is the logical next step for PlayStation’s VR pursuits.
Just like foldable smartphones, gaming hardware is undergoing a revolution with improved VR and streaming on the horizon.
Microsoft has hinted at its next-gen console tipped to be revealed at E3 2019 and Project xCloud, recently demoed at Xbox Live event.
Google is also on the brink of revealing its “future of gaming” at GDC 2019, which may or may not include its own proprietary gaming hardware.
