A new variant of ransomware has been revealed which uses a previously unknown system to increase infections. Called Popcorn Time, the malware is said to turn victims into attackers by offering a pyramid scheme-style discount.Infected users are offered the choice of having their
files unlocked for a cash payment – usually one bitcoin or around $773 – or
passing the malware on to two or more people, which if done is claimed to allow
the dobbers to get out of jail free.
The MalwareHunter security team which found the virus said it’s still in
development but could rapidly become one of the more widespread variants of
malware.
