Announced in a company blog post, the new VR headset could arrive in Asia as soon as later this year — local availability is yet to be confirmed.
The news follows speculation that PlayStation on working on its own wireless VR headset.
Qualcomm’s headset is set to be demoed at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.
The new headset is powered by Snapdragon 845 processors and will connect to PCs for gaming via a 60 GHz connection with a low 10ms latency rate, Qualcomm claims.
Any PCs and consoles connected with the headset will need to support 802.11ad Wi-Fi and run Qualcomm software.
Although this is just a reference design, the first headset is already on track to hit the market in the form of a Pico Neo2 VR headset from Chinese company Pico VR.
If it does manage to be picked up by other outlets it would seem that Qualcomm will bring a whole new level of convenience and immersive experience to VR gaming.
