Razer Electra Headset: Does It Fall Short For Gamers?

Gaming peripheral specialist Razer is leaving the gaming nest to dabble in mobile accessories with its latest electrifying (but a tad redundant) set of cans, the Razer Electra. The Razer Electra is a pair of cushy headphones designed to boldly push bass with drivers finely tuned to lower frequencies while blocking out noise with its thick ear cushions.

The standout feature outside of audio and the pop-out green on black colour scheme is the detachable 3.5mm jack cables on the headset, but it could be a bit of a pointless feature.

While most wired headphones sport a fixed cable, the Electra has a 3.5mm jack to use one of two supplied cables. One supplied 1.3 metre rubber sheathed audio cable features two male ends to slot into the headphones and the audio source. The other features an inline microphone.

The way Razer spruiks the headset, the Electra is aimed at gamers who want a headset for their phones as well as for gaming, and so the mic-enabled cable is made compatible with the iPhone, BlackBerry and HTC phones.

The inline-mic cable, like other similar headsets, works on devices that combine 3.5mm audio and microphone jacks into the one port.

But is it really necessary to have a spare second cable without a microphone? If you’ve ever had an earphone or headphone connector die of old age and wear-and-tear on you, then perhaps the answer is yes for the sake of having a spare.

If you’re a gamer on a notebook or PC that doesn’t have a combined audio and mic jack, you could be missing out on half the gaming sound experience. As mentioned earlier, the inline cable microphone only works in a port that mixes audio and microphone capability, like many smartphone jacks.

The Electra headphones are set to reach stores in October, but Razer can’t confirm the Australian price yet. What we’ve got to work on so far is the announced US price of $59.99.
