Struggling in the smartphone market with their Blackberry phone, Research in Motion has now moved to discontinue production of its 16GB Blackberry PlayBook tablet. The company claims this move does not signal an abandonment of the tablet category as it will continue to produce and sell the 32GB and 64GB versions.
The remaining stock of 16GB PlayBooks in the channel will be allowed to sell out, the company said.
RIM has struggled to gain share in the tablet category. According to Gartner, less than a million PlayBooks were in users’ hands in 2011. In comparison Apple had 40 million iPad users.
