Gamers are getting a simple solution for console gaming video capture with upcoming Roxio Game Capture units – but quality is traded for simplicity and affordability.YouTube and mass online gaming have come together over the last few years to make video bragging a mass medium for gamers. Even the Call of Duty franchise has cottoned on with the ability to save recordings of past multiplayer matches in-game.
Upcoming Roxio Game Capture products from Rovi allow more gamers to hop onto the bandwagon with a more affordable option for recording gameplay from Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.
Users hook console-specific component AV cables (which aren’t included) into the Roxio GameCAP box which then plugs into the TV. The box records what’s on the screen and files can then be uploaded to a PC via USB and edited on the bundled software.
The GameCAP only records at 480p though, which is the trade-off for the US$99.99 price in the upcoming release.
Competing products like the AVerMedia capture card and the Hauppauge HD PVR USB come at either a higher price or less convenient package but provide higher quality video capture.
Rovi are also releasing a PC-specific video capture software option with a US$49.99 that captures HD video and stills at full screen resolutions.
