A Sydney Morning Herald report claims people from Sydney and Melbourne are using smartphone jammers to terminate people’s phone calls. One person they spoke to, Andrew, claimed he was motivated to buy the $40 jammer for “shits and giggles,” while another believes they’re teaching people manners:
“Unfortunately some people were not taught how to be considerate and we need to take matters into our own hands,” the Sydneysider said under the SMH’s comment section.
The jammers work within a 10 metre radius and disconnect phone calls within 30 or so seconds. Andrew purchased them from website Dealextreme who marked them as “electronics devices” while being imported.
In Australia the ACMA prohibits the supply, possession or use of jammers with penalties including a fine of up to $165,000 or two years imprisonment.
