After giving Smarthouse a sneek peek of their Series 7 Slate Samsung has confirmed that they will launch a Slate running the Windows 8 operating system in the second half of 2012.
The slate will likely be a modified version of Samsung’s Series 7 slate, which has a touch screen, an optional wireless keyboard and runs Windows 7, said Uhm Kyu Ho of Samsung marketing, in an interview with Bloomberg. The new slate will run Windows 8, the newest version of Microsoft’s operating system.
Samsung is the latest in a string of hardware manufacturers, including HP and Sustek, that say they are readying Windows 8 tablets for a late-2012 release.
Microsoft introduced Windows 8 back in September, but still has not confirmed an official release date. The company generally releases a new Windows version every three years. Since Windows 7 came out in the fall of 2009, that means we can expect the newest version sometime in 2012.
The new touch-friendly OS is Microsoft’s bid to enter the competitive mobile PC market, now dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating system. Microsoft has integrated its Metro user interface, which was developed for touch-based devices, including tablets, into the new OS, though it will be “equally at home” with a mouse and keyboard for a PC, according to the company.
