Samsung-Funded Study Says 3D Causes Eye Fatigue

Samsung co-funded research by the Journal of Vision has found that certain kinds of 3D TVs can cause eyestrain, blurry vision, eye tiredness, and headaches. The University of California-Berkeley study found that the relationship and changes between image depth and a user’s proximity to the screen were key players in viewer eye strain when viewing stereo display images.

The study that was partly funded by Samsung’s research and development wing and published in the Journal of Vision has aimed to educate 3D content makers rather than 3D technology producers.

Finding that viewers closer to the screen experienced more eye fatigue from pop-out images and those further from the screen were more deeply affected by images more recessed beyond the screen, the researchers have advised 3D content producers to work on tailoring content to minimise these effects on audiences.

“The display engineer and stereo content producer should understand the parameters of the conflict and then determine how best to minimize it and thereby increase viewing comfort,” said researchers within the study.
