Phil Newton the recently appointed head of Samsung’s IT division and his marketing manager have been left with egg on their face after they claimed that the Korean manufacturer was set to launch a new touch screen slate PC to compete against the Apple iPad.
This is not true in the short term say Samsung executives in Korea. “We have raised the issue with Samsung Australia. We are working on some new products at the moment and these will be announced shortly” they said.Jai Sanderson the Communications Manager at Samsung Australia said “there are some issues over the comments that Phil Newton recently made. These are being addressed at the moment”.
Several weeks ago it was Newton who revealed to ChannelNews that Samsung was working on new Chrome based Netbook with the product set to be launched later this year. However Samsung executives in Korea and Singapore are refusing to comment on Newton’s claims”.
Newton told APC Magazine that PC-grade processing power and connectivity would be cornerstones of the new device. Newton also criticised the iPad.
“The problems I see with the iPad are its processing power and (lack of) connectivity to a certain extent” Newton said during a panel discussion at the Samsung Forum in Singapore.
“I do feel that that slate-type platform has legs but I think the legs need to be far more powerful, for example an Atom-based product which has far greater flexibility, not to mention inputs and outputs. This has more potential than an iPad.”
