Samsung’s virtual reality headset, the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition powered by Oculus, has hit the US market.The Gear VR is aimed at the enthusiast community, with Samsung stating its release will enable “developers and early adopters to see and experience content as it is created”.
For those looking to pick up the virtual reality headset, a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone is, however, a prerequisite.
The Gear VR is powered by the Note 4, employing the smartphone’s 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, with the Note 4 locking into the front of the unit.
Equipped with a touchpad, back button, volume controls and focus adjustment wheel, Samsung states the Gear VR’s “flexible, lightweight materials make it comfortable to wear and easy-to-use”.
“With Gear VR Innovator Edition, Samsung is putting the device in the hands of creators to craft amazing experiences, as we define this new mobile category together,” commented Justin Denison, Samsung Telecommunications America Product Strategy and Marketing vice president.
“This is a great opportunity for the enthusiast community, developers and Samsung to get feedback and continue to innovate in this exciting new space.”
The Gear VR carries a price tag of US$199.
