Samsung is trying to get a a patent for what looks like a large Smartphone with a screen on each side of the device.
Recent patent filing in at the US patents office reveals an aplication with drawings that the company is attempting to design a device with a dual touch-sensor, such as a tablet or large smartphone, but with touch screen panels located on both the front and back.
“Mobile terminal having dual touch screen and method of controlling content therein,” is the expresssion revealed in the application documentation.
This in laymans language means that a user could control the device either by touching the display, as normal, or by performing the same motions on the rear panel. More complex controls, such as zooming gestures, could integrate both front and rear panels. Software with dual-touch hardware creates a scenario in which the user could execute twice as many commands since there is now twice as much screen space: less clutter.
The challenge Samsung is facing now is the ability to prove their concept is significant different from patents that have already been filed. The company already files a copious amount of patents, every week filing more patent applications then Nokia, Motorola, RIM and Sony Ericsson combined. But, very few of them end-up as actual products.
