It’s that time of the year when big TV vendors start to roll out their brand new models. And for brands like Samsung, it’s a case of setting new TV display benchmarks that count.
Last year it was all about 4K and Ultra HD.
This year it’s all about Super High Definition nano-crystals and Quantum Dot
technology.
At Samsung it’s all about Curved TV’s, SUHD
technology and a new generation of HD sound systems. Models that deliver
amazing sound to a new range of curved sound bars that are specifically
designed to complement the Korean Company’s new curved TV range.
This year Samsung is serious with a capital
‘S’ when it comes to its 2015 models.
Samsung not only claimed, but also demonstrated
that its SUHD quantum dot technology delivers better colour and brightness than
a lot of their competitors, at a recent gala event in Sydney
The entirely new SUHD range with fresh
aesthetics is a serious trendsetter.
The top-tier curved JS9500 set has stunning
full-array LED backlights with local dimming and a chamfer bezel. A feature of
the range is a Shirring design on the back that lends a soft, textured feel to
the rear of the TV.
Quantum Dot
All of Samsung’s SUHD TVs use quantum dot
technology that generates an expanded colour gamut that delivers a massive 20-percent
more colour than existing televisions.
This new TV tech produces demonstrably significantly
brighter images and more accurate rendering of colour to a screen.
New Tizen OS
While many manufacturers are running their
2015 Smart TVs on Android operating systems, Samsung has developed its own
open-source Tizen software which is used in the new Gear 2 Samsung watch.
The new Samsung menu system delivers a
crisp clean menu that is significantly easier to navigate than tired, old
program and app menu systems. Users can easily access streaming services such
as Like WebOS.
Tizen provides a sleek, easy-to-use interface,
leveraging a ticker of “tiles” across the bottom of the screen. Switching among
multiple apps ensures they appear almost instantaneously.
Thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy, Samsung’s
SUHD TVs with Tizen, automatically sense and connect to specific Samsung smart
devices for instant second-screen and content sharing functions.
HDR is finally here
Samsung’s flagship television was on
display showing off short clips of Life of Pi and Ridley Scott’s Exodus. Both
of have been specially mastered in 4K UHD with 10-bit colour and in High
Dynamic Range.
10-bit colour and High Dynamic Range are
reportedly included in the new 4K UHD Blu-ray spec, as designated by the newly
formed UHD alliance.
High Dynamic Range allows for brighter
images with even greater contrast between dark and light. 10-bit colour, on the
other hand, goes back to the enhanced colour gamut referenced earlier – sources
offering 10-bit colour and HDR are not available yet. But when 4K UHD Blu-ray
discs arrive, we’ll get both and from what we’ve seen so far, it is going to be
spectacular in the literal sense of the term.
Samsung still makes regular UHD TVs
This new SUHD line up doesn’t usurp
Samsung’s standard UHD TVs. Rather, it simply represents a new premium offering
from the company.
The Korean electronics giant’s new line of
smart TVs are organised into three ranges. The 7 series are
ultra-high-definition sets starting at $3199 for the 55-inch model, while the 8
series are so-called SUHD sets starting at $4999 for the 55-inch. The
top-of-the-line 9 series are curved SUHD sets, the biggest of which is 88
inches and will set you back $24,999.
