Samsung Smash Apple & Co At Global Mobile Awards

The Oscars were just a warm up for this year’s Global Mobile Awards, an event dedicated to rewarding the most elite mobile incarnations, applications and manufacturers. Some of which went home with multiple awards, while others headed back to their ‘humble’ homes empty handed.

Although at one stage an underdog in the mobile industry, last night the company nabbed two of the four most important awards. Not only did they nab the Device Manufacturer of the Year award, they also won the Best Smartphone award for their Galaxy SII, beating their sworn-enemy’s iPhone 4S.

The judges said the Galaxy SII has been “a phenomenal success around the world, this has outperformed all its Android rivals and demonstrated the maturity of the ecosystem.”

I imagine Samsung’s engineers headed back to their offices where they celebrated their extensive wins by working ever-so-meticulously throughout the night on a way to make screen diodes shine even brighter.

Apple didn’t go home empty handed though, with their iPad 2 (not surprisingly) winning the Best Mobile Tablet award. Nokia also had something to rejoice over as they dominated the Feature Phone or Entry Phone Category with their Nokia C3 taking home the gong, (it was a tough win for the C3, who was competing again Nokia’s C-01 and Nokia’s C2-03 in the same category).

Rovio won Best Mobile App for Consumers for the second year on the trot with Angry Birds, albeit the Rio instalment, while Google’s Maps was awarded Best Consumer Mobile Service.

The Most Innovative Mobile App went to keyboard connoisseurs Swiftkey, while Citrix Systems won Best Mobile App for Enterprises.
