Free-to-air networks are looking to catch up (literally) with Foxtel who has gone heavy on apps and IPTV services for iPad, Samsung TVs and Xbox 360, with the Yahoo!7 app for Samsungs, announced yesterday.

Yahoo!7 app with premium content is being launched exclusively with Samsung, to millions of Aussies who own Galaxy phones, Tabs, Smart TVs, Home Theatres, Blu-rays.

This the first time a PLUS7 app has been available on mobile or tablets, but it will now be hitting the Galaxy S II, S III, Note, Tab 2 10.1, and 2010 Smart TVs models and above.

The free Plus7 app is now sitting in the Samsung App Store ready to go.

The deal also means Seven shows like Home & Away, Packed to the Rafters and My Kitchen Rules can be viewed on Samsungs via Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) for the first time.

However, the shows won’t be streamed live, but are part of Yahoo7 catch up service and will be available to watch within 24 hours of being shown on TV, Samsung confirmed to SmartHouse.

The app also streams TV shows from  other free-to-air channels 7Mate, 7Two and ‘other content partners’, according to the app description.

Yahoo!7’s Fango, 7News and TV Guide apps are also on Samsung Apps Store.

Kurt Burnett, Digital Officer Seven Network, said “Seven is the home of Australia’s favourite TV shows and now, through PLUS7, for the first time will be available on tablet and mobile devices in partnership with Samsung. We’re excited about the opportunity this will give to not only consumers of our content but also our advertising partners”

The partnership with Samsung will provide Yahoo!7 innovative technology devices and platforms to distribute its content, according to a statement.

“We recognise at Samsung that partnerships with companies like Yahoo!7 complement our hardware,” said Arno Lenior, Marketing Director – Corporate, Samsung Australia.

“Samsung is proud to be a company that makes a broad range of products that provide consumers with a truly connected multi-screen experience.”

The content deal between Yahoo7 and Samsung, announced yesterday, also includes a commercial partnership which will see ad campaigns run across Channel Seven, 7TWO, 7Mate and Pacific Magazines and the Yahoo!7 Network.
