Samsung seeks SSD superstar status with its new 850 Pro series, designed for use in high-end PCs and workstations with a special 10 year warranty that comes with qualifying conditions.
Samsung’s newest 850 Pro series SSD has launched in Australia at last, featuring Samsung’s cutting-edge three-dimensional vertical NAND (3D V-NAND) flash memory technology, promising a new breed of performance and reliability for Samsung’s SSD portfolio.
Todd Lynton, Director of Business Solutions at Samsung Australia said: “Today, Samsung introduces the next major evolution of SSD technology in Australia with the 850 PRO SSD.
“The new proprietary 3D V-NAND technology solidifies Samsung’s position as a leader in SSD technology by offering high performance and endurance that is backed by a 10 year warranty.
“We know the 850 PRO will satisfy Australian enthusiasts and gamers that demand the fastest seek and transfer times in their applications,” he added.

So, what is 3D V-NAND technology?
It is a flash memory technology that features a proprietary vertical cell structure, representing a breakthrough in overcoming the density limit currently facing planar (2D) NAND architecture used in conventional flash memory.
Samsung says this delivers speed, endurance and energy efficiency improvements. The new 3D V-NAND-based SSDs have higher endurance for writing data and consume less power, compared to planar (2D) MLC NAND-based drives.??The Company promises the 850 SSD fast access and transfer speeds, as well as exceptional endurance (150TB), with the highest level of performance for SATA III (6GB/s) SSDs.
Its sequential read performance reaches up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s), with write performance of up to 520MB/s.
Random read performance is up to 100,000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS. The increased performance allows for faster transfer of data (especially large photo and video files) to improve computing experience.
Samsung also includes a free copy of its Samsung Magician SSD Toolkit and Samsung’s Data Migration software, allowing you to easily clone your existing hard drive and its entire contents, OS, apps and all, directly to your new SSD in two to three hours, after which you remove your HDD, put in the SSD, turn on and discover your computer has turned into a rocket.
?The Samsung Magician SSD Toolkit is also designed to help users easily manage the health and performance of their Samsung SSD and assists users in updating firmware, measuring performance, and optimising the configuration of a Windows operating system installation.

So, what about that 10 year warranty with its special limitations?
Samsung says the 10 year warranty specified is based on usage of 40GB written per day.
The warranty period for the Samsung 850 PRO SSD is the shorter of a period of 10 years or the period ending on the date when the SSD has exceeded its Total Bytes Written (TBW) of 150TB.
Samsung recommends a higher level of data centre drive for more write-intensive applications. More information on the 10 year warranty is available here.
Available now in stores, Samsung’s 850 Pro SSD 128GB model costs $189, the 256 model is $379, the 512GB model is $749 and the 1TB model is $999.
