Foxtel has still not revealed what new digital TV channels it will deliver after Australia’s latest satellite, the Optus D3, was successfully launched from the ArianeSpace centre in French Guiana at the weekend.

The D3 will expand Optus’ satellite capacity by 30 percent, provide in-orbit redundancy and marks the first use of the Broadcast Satellite Service (BSS) spectrum in Australia, says CEO Paul O’Sullivan. It has a potential 15-year lifespan. It will also allow Foxtel to launch several new TV  channels.

The new BSS band will allow Optus’s broadcast customers to increase their delivery of the next generation of digital and high-definition TV to the home.

Recently Foxtel said that they will announce up to 30 new sporting and movie channels in October. Foxtel CEO Kim Williams said: “Once successful testing is complete over the coming months, the new satellite will empower us to offer our customers even more choice, new services, increased flexibility and even greater value.

“The next generation of Foxtel digital will offer customers 30 additional channels, including 10 additional HD channels, enhanced navigation features, and significantly more interactive and on demand features,” he added.

Optus D3 one of two satellites aboard the Arianme 5 rocket was injected into orbit 34 minutes after liftoff, and was the sixth satellite lofted by Arianespace for SingTel Optus.

According to the Australian newspaper spin-off brands linked with the Movie Network Channels and Showtime Australia will dominate . They also claim that Foxtel will drop drop their  Showtime Greats channel, instead launching a range of largely genre-based showtime channels — action, premiere, comedy and drama — the first two of which will screen also as high-definition channels.

The Australian also claims that new standard definition channels will include National Geographic Wild, Lifestyle You, The Style Network (a spin-off from entertainment channel E!), Discovery’s Turbo Max, Kids CC and 13th Street (a crime and suspense channel), as well as the previously announced Sky News Local.

FOX8, W and Fox Sports 1 and 2 are expected to be added to the HD platform and eight more channels, including Sci-fi, Lifestyle You and Turbo Max, will also have timeshift channels.
