Pocket God, a popular game available for the iPhone via Apple’s online Apps Store, has come under fire from the Pacific Women’s Information Network. The game had been found offensive by Pacific Islanders because it depicts islanders in grass skirts who are set on fire and tossed to the sharks.
The game is described as making the player an “all-powerful god that rules over the primitive islanders”.
The US creator, Bolt Creative, argues the game does not depict any particular nationality but Elaine Howard from the Pacific Women’s Information Network says that’s “ridiculous”, and has sent a complaint to Bolt stating the game is an “arrogant slap in the face to our people”.
