The design conscious will have a larger variety of colours to choose from in their kitchen appliances with Sharp’s new microwave oven, which comes in red.

It is becoming increasingly common to see the likes of notebook PCs and other geeky gadgets shed their boring grey and beige fascias for a new range of funky colours. Lenovo, for example, introduced its first consumer notebook in the US in flashy pink.

And appliance manufacturers have been catching on to the idea as well. LG is challenging the concept of “whitegoods” with its champagne-coloured washing machine, for example. Smeg has pushed the envelope further with its ice-block looking fridge which comes in lime green.

Sharp appears to be the latest to the arena of colourful kitchens, with the R330NR microwave, which the company says is targeted at design-conscious consumers.

The microwave offers 1100W of output power, with a choice of five power levels. It uses a pictorial key sheet for selecting cooking options and sports a 320mm wide glass turntable.

Functions include instant cook and defrost options, more/less setting and an inbuilt demonstration mode. The microwave also offers features a child lock for safety.
