Contrasting its previous stance, Sony has confirmed it’s launching cross-play functionality for Epic Game’s hugely successful Fortnite, compatible between the PS4 and other gaming consoles.
A beta version has reportedly released today, enabling PlayStation 4 Fortnite players to compete against those on the Xbox One, PC/Mac, iOS/Android devices and the Nintendo Switch.
Sony PlayStation has made headlines in recent months for being the only major gaming console to prevent cross-play Fortnite functionality.
Until now, cross-play functionality had been restricted to mobile version and PCs/Macs, however, was not available with other gaming consoles.
Today’s news is a 180-degree pivot on Sony’s former stance, coupled with its pledge to implement better cross-play functionality in future titles.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) President and Global CEO, John Kodera, claims the shift is a “major policy change” for the Japanese giant, coupled with internal process amendments.
“We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward,” Kodera adds.
Fortnite has thus far collected over 125 million users, less than a year after its release
