The new Sony VAIO X notebook which is only 14mm and 700g is set to get two browsers with Sony insiders confirming to ChannelNews that the new lightweight notebook which will go on sale in Australia later this year will be bundled with the Google Chrome browser and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
This is the first time that a PC vendor has bundled the Chrome browser from Google.
Since being launched 12 months ago the Chrome browser has only managed to snare 2.7% share of the global browser market with the search Company tipped to announce additional browser deals during the coming months.
Sony, has offically refused to comment on the record.
Analysts are saying that If Google secures a deal with the top five PC manufacturers including HP, Acer,Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba they will increase their market share significantly and could easily take third place in a battle with Firefox, Opera and Safari.
Currently Sony is struggling in the notebook market with the Company reporting a 37.4% year-on-year decrease in sales of their networked product and services division. This decrease was mainly due to lower game and VAIO PC sales. Sony said that the decrease in VAIO PC sales was due to a decline in unit selling prices. Currently the Sony VAIO notebooks are among the most expensive sold in Australia. The division reported an operating loss of US$414 million.
Recently Sony Australia refused to answer questions as to whether its Vaio laptops are equipped with faulty graphics chips from Nvidia. The problem comes only months after the company admitted that certain Vaio notebooks were prone to melting after overheating.
A note on the Sony web site said “A symptom may arise in which the unit’s plastic could be deformed in the DC jack inlet or LCD surrounding area due to extreme high temperatures. This has the potential to affect models which were sold between May 2007 and July 2008”.
