Talking it up as the “most technologically advanced” and innovative digital camera the company have ever come out with, Sony have announced they’ll be bringing their new α9 full frame mirrorless camera to the Australian market.
They say “the new camera offers many impressive capabilities that are simply not possible with a modern digital SLR camera including high-speed, blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 20fps, 60 AF/AE tracking calculations per second, a maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32,000 second and much more.”
Sony claim the α9 features the world’s first 35mm full-frame stacked 24.2-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS sensor which they say enables data speed processing at up to 20x faster than the company’s previous full-frame mirrorless cameras when paired with the α9’s upgraded BIONZ X processing engine and front-end LSI that promises to maximise overall performance.
The company are also talking a big game about the α9’s battery life. They say it packs 2.2x the battery life of their previous efforts.
Beyond the specs, the biggest drawcard here seems to be the filming functionality. Sony say the α9 is a perfect fit for those looking to get high-quality 4K video footage.
According to them, “the camera’s innovative AF system tracks complex, erratic motion with higher accuracy than ever before, with the ability to calculate AF/AE at up to 60 times per second, regardless of shutter release and frame capture. Further, when the shutter is released while shooting stills, the electronic viewfinder functions with absolutely no blackout, giving the user a seamless live view of their subject at all times. This feature truly combines all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the immediacy and “in the moment” advantages that not even the finest optical viewfinders can match, and is available in all still image modes including high speed 20 fps continuous shooting.”
The camera will also arrive alongside a suite of accessories – including a rechargeable battery add-on, vertical grip, multi-battery adapter kit, grip extension, earpiece cup and screen protector.
Australian pricing will see the α9 arrive at $6999.
Sony say the α9 will be available through both retail and online channels from the 2nd of June.
The SEL100400GM lens will arrive shortly thereafter in July at an RRP of $3999.
