Insiders are tipping that Sony Ericsson, who are struggling in the phone market is set to launch a Playstation Android-based smartphone. The device could be shown as early as next week in Europe.
When European web site,TechRadar, recently tried to get comment from several developers they discovered that some of them had already signed a non-disclosure agreement.
SmartHouse was told today that two manufacturers in Asia are already working on a PSP mobile which will allow content including an exclusive range of games to be downloaded to the device.
What is not known is whether the device will be branded Sony or Sony Ericsson. We are told that if the device is given final approval that it will be branded Sony and offered as an extension of the Sony PSP family.
We have also been told that Nintendo has been experimenting with an Android-based DSi device but no plans have been implemented to manufacture a device.
“A mobile DSi is an option and it has been looked at” said a Nintendo official. “We have no plans at this stage to combine a mobile offering with any of our products”.
A former Sony executive said: “Sony are concerned that Apple is starting to get traction in the mobile gaming market with their iPhone. Sony is looking at several options. The new PSP has not been as successful as Sony would like so they are looking at alternatives”.
