Sony, who is banking on 3D technology to deliver those profits in the future, is set to update both their new Slim PS3 and their old PS3 to be 3D compatible however the upgrade is useless without a 3D TV or display screen to view 3D content.
The Company has confirmed that a major firmware upgrade is set to be implemented that will see 3D stereoscopic capability added to their Playstation consoles which the struggling Company is trying to position the console as both a gaming and movie device.
Last week the Company said that they want to lead the world in the development of 3D technology; however several competitors including Panasonic, LG and Samsung have plans to spoil Sony’s game plan with 3D plans of their own.
On Friday Sony executives said that they intend to bring out 3D movies on its Blu-ray format and make HDTVs more suitable to the display of 3D images. Sony said that as a consequence, the firmware upgrade will force many to upgrade their other hardware to take full advantage of all 3D games and movies that Sony will soon deliver.
At the upcoming CES Show in Las Vegas Sony is expected to demonstrate PS3 consoles running 3D movies and games as well as a new motion controller that will compete head on with Nintendo’s controller for the Wii console.
