Yesterday, a Federal Court in New York approved a class action lawsuit against Sony for claiming its Xperia suite of phones and tablets were “waterproof”.
The lawsuit alleges that consumers were misguided by Sony’s marketing, as Xperia devices are not designed for underwater use and simply offer water-resistant protection.
For recently purchased devices, the class action seeks as 12-month warranty extension or a 50% reimbursement of the damaged devices’ retail price.
This is not the final financial outlay Sony is likely to refund.
Sony will need to settle with the court on December 1st, as such depending on its defence the numbers could change.
While the class action only applies to the United States at current, other affected individuals who are interested in taking up the claim can sign up here by 30th January 2018.
A list of entitled devices is below (with the inclusion of both WiFi & LTE tablet versions).
The refund figure the lawsuit has allocated to each product can be found here.
