Aussie video streaming service, Stan, has inked a new content deal with Disney, snaring rights to several movies and TV Shows away from industry behemoth Netflix Australia.
Considered a big win for Stan, the streaming service will be the new home of several Disney, Marvel and Pixel blockbusters from December 14.
Launching in time for the school holidays, family friendly flicks include The Incredibles, The Lion King, Frozen, Monsters Inc, Toy Story and Up.
For older audiences, films include Star Wars’ The Last Jedi, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Marvel’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War plus much more.
The news comes after Disney exit its partnership with Netflix Australia earlier this year, following reports it’s focused on building its own streaming platform (‘Disney+’).
Despite this, the studio continues to maintain some licenses with Foxtel and Seven.
Seen as retaliation by some, Netflix has begun cancelling several original Marvel shows (e.g. Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage).
It’s unclear how long the arrangement with Nine-owned Stan will last, with commentators questioning whether the move is a ‘placeholder’ until Disney+ launches next year.
It comes as Disney begins investing in original content for its streaming service, including a new High School Music series and Star Wars spin-off shows.
The news intensifies competition in the local SVOD space, with new entrants such as CBS-owned 10 All Access joining the ring.
Concerning price competition, Stan starts from $10/month and Netflix $9.99/month – both offering one screen at standard definition.
Stan charges $15/month for four screens and 4K/UHD content, whilst similar costs $17.99/month on Netflix.
