If you love shooting home movies, you’ll be interested to know that Sony has unveiled its SR-Series hard disk drive camcorder range which includes a 60GB model as well as 30GB models.
“Hard disk camcorders are becoming an increasingly popular recording option for customers who want long hours of recording without any interruptions by having to replace media,” said Sony’s Di Shepherd.
In addition to extended recording times, compared to Sony’s previous HDD handycams, the 60GB model (SR80) and the 30GB models (SR60 and SR40) offer a ‘Visual Index’ function for searching recorded content and a ‘One Touch DVD Burn’ function.
In terms of optics – the cameras feature Carl Zeiss lenses and feature a 1/5.5 inch megapixel CCD in the SR80 and SR60. In the SR40, there is a 1/6 inch 800K CCD. You can view your footage via a 2.7 inch LCD.
With up to 42 hours of footage stored on your 60GB handycam, you have a lot to lose in case you drop or knock the camera. To minimise this risk, the camera has been wrapped with a shock absorber. Sony also says that upon detection of a drop by the 3G Sensor built into the unit, the hard disk power will shut off automatically thus preventing any damage to the hard disk. Recording continues via the Drop Stream Buffer and once hard disk power resumes, the buffer video stream is saved into the hard disk.
The three new handycams feature Sony STAMINA battery packs which Sony says will keep the SR40 and SR60 going for six hours continuous recording, while the SR80 can run for seven hours straight.
